The Goals of Apache del Rio

Generosity and sharing are of great importance within all Native American cultures.  These traditional values of sharing, community participation and the sense of responsibility to our people and to the future generations are the basis for the Indian way of life. Caring and wealth redistribution are advanced within these traditions and emphasizes interdependence and the good of the entire community rather than the individual.  Modern variations on these traditions have been broken down as a result of European colonization and the breakdown of family within Native American communities.

Native Americans are unique among minorities in that they seek to maintain the integrity of their nations social, cultural, governmental, religious and economic systems.  Maintaining and passing on traditions depends on continuation of Native ways, including the practice of generosity and also education.

Education is very important to Native Americans.  Not only are American Indian families encouraging their own children to pursue higher education now more than ever, but also desire to fulfill the need for the public to become aware of the improvements that Native Americans have made for society.  The public needs to know that more than 60 percent of the worlds food was first harvested by the Indians of the Americas and shared with those around them.  The cultural, social and political practices of American Indians have transformed life beyond the reservation and they have played an enormous role in transforming cultures through their way of life, their attitudes and values, the types of food eaten, the clothes worn and the institutions established within their communities .Taken together, the Indian way has not only been preserved, but it has been woven into American economic, political and social life.

Despite being an organization in its infancy, Apache del Rio takes an active role in helping people.  Our goal is to expand and help more people.  We do not limit our services to people who are of Native descent, just as all are welcome within our organization regardless of ethnic background.  We are moving toward gaining a Non-Profit status.  We need your help in these efforts.

Programs of Interest:

Educational Programs - To ensure that the public is aware of the existence of Native Americans in Texas.  Educating everyone on the contributions made by the first Americans and their role in society today.  To set up an exhibition, call Steven Fernandez at 210-590-2832.

Youth Mentorship Program - To provide positive role models for children 12 and under.  Teens receive training to help mentor young ones and help out in the community.

Community Pantry - Temporary food resource for those in need.  We are in constant need of food items and also of clothing to redistribute.

Cultural Certification Program - An exclusive workshop for teachers.  This program will train educators how to effectively and accurately portray Native American cultures in a school setting and teach for inclusion.

Scholarships - For deserving youth whose parents cannot afford higher education.  This program is merely in the planning stages, but it is one of our primary goals.
